Even five years on, recovery from the earthquake disaster seems like it is still a work in progress. In my role as an ambassador in the 1000km Relay to Tokyo, this year again I hope to go a step at a time – steadily, each and every step of the way – to pass the sash on to the next runner. And I will be carrying with me the commitment to make sure that the earthquake disaster is never forgotten.

Last year I took part as the last runner in the 1000km Relay to Tokyo and greatly enjoyed the honor of handing off to Governor Masuzoe the sash that carried with it the sentiments of all involved. Though my involvement in the Rio Olympic Games this year makes it impossible for me to participate 1000km Relay to Tokyo, I urge each and every one of you to imbue the sash with your own passionate commitment to completing the 1000 km run. I will do my best to achieve my target of winning a gold medal in Rio!

His Wikipedia entry is translated into 90 languages, a record for a Japanese person and a testament of his great international popularity.

Comment

Anime songs are tightly packed with stories of justice, love, friendship, and hope. Most importantly, they have the power to make people smile. Reconstruction assistance song "Tohoku Gasshin Miraigar" was born from the desire to support the future of our children. I will continue singing until the day all of us can smile and laugh from the bottom of our hearts once more. Let's run together towards the future.

It`s been just over 5 years since the Tohoku disaster, an event that Japanese people will always remember. A more appropriate way of putting it might be that Tohoku and its victims will always remain a part of all the people who are in Japan.
Mourning those who lost their lives and supporting those who survived, everyone has their own way of processing this disaster.
I would like to think that all people, not only those in Japan but in the whole world, will not forget what happened and use the memory of those who suffered as a catalyst to see each day with a new outlook and a deeper appreciation for each precious day we have been given.
